Being Homeless and LGBT in Jamaica

Jamaica is one of the most homophobic countries in the world. Many ask why the LGBT community or those who work with the community still living in the country. My response- this is home.

“This is my home. If we all packed up and left, then who would actually work towards change in Jamaica’s LGBT community?”

I work with homeless and vulnerable LGBT persons. I have heard their stories of being homeless since ages as young as 8 years old, and having to perform sexual favors for meals. These horrifying stories fuel the work I do. This is my purpose.

Being LGBT in Jamaica means advocating for your rights and for those unable to advocate for their own. That’s where I come. I try my best to ensure that they have access to healthcare and medication, also meals and sanitary conveniences.
